From packing your bag to stepping off the plane at your destination, every part of a holiday is exciting. Whether you’re taking a short break with loved ones, or a few months out to travel the world alone, holidays are there to create memories you’ll never forget and to stretch the imagination. Holidays really can change your life for the better, but how?

1) Strengthen your relationships

Holidays give you and your loved ones the space to communicate away from your usual routines. A new environment can bring you closer together to create shared and cherished memories.

2) Learn more about yourself

Not only can holidays work wonders for your relationship with others, but also your relationship with yourself. You have more time to reconnect with who you are, who you want to be and where you want to be. If ever there was a reason to book a break, this is it.

3) Understand the feelings of others

When on holiday, you have a greater opportunity to observe, and better understand, other people. Try not to be too wrapped up in your own life, instead learn to be more understanding and empathetic of others. If this isn’t something that comes naturally to you, making the effort on holiday is a great place to start, as you have more time to invest in changing your behaviours.

4) Get a wake-up call

When out of your normal, busy routine, you can focus more on what areas of your life require improvement. Whether that’s your relationships, your career or your health and wellbeing, a holiday can give you a much-needed wake-up call.

5) Destress and recharge

Stress is a negative emotion that can severely damage your wellbeing if it’s left to grow. Holidays allow you to rest, destress and recharge. You also have more time to develop a happier mind. Mindful travel journal, You Are Here, allows you to record your holiday memories to look back on in years to come and will allow you to become more mindful day-to-day. On your return, you will feel more energised and motivated to make a greater impact on the world.

6) Get a better perspective

Holidays are a sure-fire way to gain a better perspective on life. Throw yourself into the local culture, embrace it fully and then take a step back to think about what you have learnt. Once you do this, it’ll be much easier for you to see the bigger picture in situations when you return home.

7) More positive sense of self

By getting the most from your holiday, you can build a greater sense of self. This will have a positive impact on your self-confidence and will improve your self-esteem. It is key that you continue to have this belief in yourself when you go back to your usual routine.

8) Improve overall wellbeing

Holidays allow you to take time away from your busy schedule and improve your work-life balance. You have worked hard for this time off, you deserve to enjoy it and the company of your friends and family.

9) Reconnect with your family

It’s too easy to get stuck in a rut at home with the kids. A holiday gives you the opportunity to reconnect with them and even improve relationships for your return. If your children love stretching their minds, pack a copy of This Book Stinks, an activity book packed-full of engaging and quirky tasks for them to complete while away.

10) Have a happier outlook

Holidays tend to give you a more positive outlook on life. Some time away can give you a chance to take a better look at your life and allow you to see yourself differently. If you find yourself feeling much happier when away, be willing to maintain that feeling on your return. It will take some work at first, but it’ll be well worth it in the end.

11) Establish better habits

A break from your usual routine will motivate you to reassess your life and work to substitute any negative habits for more positive ones. If you know you can live a better life, and you want to do so, a few days away is the ideal time to kickstart those changes.

Holidays have the power to transform the way you think and feel. When returning from a break, the chances are you’ll feel refreshed, energised and raring to go. It is then up to you to channel your new-found motivation and re-establish your positive energy in your day-to-day life at home. You can do it, you just have to believe in yourself.
